Always a promising sign for a debut filmmaker to land their title in the main strand at Cannes. That's what's happened to Nemes Laszlo, the Hungarian director whose study under the great Tarr Bela seems to have paid off. Critics are responding fairly well overall to Nemes' Holocaust film Son of Saul, which is noted by all (in various terms) as an intense experience and a thoroughly unique, original vision. Some are even touting it as the first legitimate Palme d'Or contender, though even next Sunday there'll still surely be no clear method of predicting the jury's choices with any real accuracy.
