Following the controversy that saw Miguel Gomes' Arabian Nights exiled from the main selection at Cannes, the Portuguese filmmaker seems to have vindicated himself, simply by screening the film itself. Reviews from critics at the fest are almost universally positive, noting the film' epic scope and grand ambition, and the considerable returns that Gomes reaps. A Directors' Fortnight berth and a screening schedule that split the film into its three constituent parts have diminished Arabian Nights' visibility, but, judging by the reception from those who have sought out either the film in its entirety or the work as a whole, it ought to achieve even greater international success, and possibly even acclaim, than Gomes' previous feature, Tabu.
