With an impressive 13, Birdman took the lead at today's Broadcast Film Critics Association nominations. The film benefitted from inclusion in the association's additional comedy categories, which cynics realists have assumed to be excuses to draw more stars to the group's awards telecast. Fair enough, I guess. In so doing, they've also shown the first significant love from any awards group yet this year for Angelina Jolie's Unbroken; alongside Ava DuVernay for Selma, this pair become the first two women to be nominated in the BFCA's Best Director category in the same year. For that alone, you won't hear me complaining. Winners for their whopping 28 categories will be announced live on TV on the 15th of January.
