BOX OFFICE REPORT: GUARD YOURSELVES, THIS IS GALACTICALLY BAD

It was the slowest weekend at the domestic box office for six years, allowing Guardians of the Galaxy to maintain its dominance over the competition, and hang onto the top spot on its sixth weekend. There was only one wide new release and it couldn't even crack the Top 10.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy ($10,357,345)

The highest-grossing August release of all time is only the fourth film in the last ten years to clock up four weekends atop the box office in North America, following The Dark Knight, Avatar and The Hunger Games in doing so. None of them made such a pitifully low amount for a first place result in any such weekends, but never mind. Guardians is on track for a superb total gross, and it's on the brink of $300 million.

Another faith-based misfire in the more recent months of the year, following in the footsteps of other disappointments Moms' Night Out, Persecuted and When the Game Stands Tall, which easily outgrossed this on its second weekend and still did pretty poorly. Studios will do well to notice the running theme here: all of them soft-pedalled their Christian themes in the marketing, and all of them underperformed.

Well-meaning immigration drama doesn't deserve any more than this, so who can complain?!

By far the weekend's most promising new release got dumped into one screen by Strand Releasing, and the result was a measly $6,488.

77. Kelly & Cal ($5,387)

IFC obviously had as little faith in this Juliette Lewis drama as anyone else would have in a film fronted by herself.

80. Rocks in My Pockets ($4,674)

Intriguing Scandinavian festival hit fails to break out with North American arthouse audiences. Even they need actively sold to, it seems.

82. Levitated Mass ($4,589)

84. Thunder and the House of Magic! ($4,091)

An actual film, this. Actually released in 10 theatres... why?! The trailer's been everywhere in Europe. Goodness only know for what reason.

Next weekend sees three new nationwide releases, sequel Dolphin Tale 2 and No Good Deed - neither are expected to do very well - and Tom Hardy / James Gandolfini thriller The Drop.
