OBIT - LAUREN BACALL

She was an icon of cinema for almost every moment in her incredible 70-year career. Lauren Bacall passed away Tuesday the 12th of August 2014 from a heart attack. Born Betty Joan Perske in New York, she was spotted by Howard Hawks' wife Slim for a role in To Have and Have Not - her first, and most famous, and the one that would not only secure her stardom but also her relationship with her costar Humphrey Bogart. Though she was criticised by some for favouring her marriage over her career, she endured through the decades as an actor of supreme poise and a character of bracing intelligence. The star of To Have, The Big Sleep, Key Largo, Designing Woman, Murder on the Orient Express and The Shootist went on to enjoy perhaps the finest years of her cinematic life as she entered her final decades, including roles in films as diverse as Lars von Trier's Dogville and Manderlay, Jonathan Glazer's Birth, and the film that would earn her a sole Oscar nomination in a career full of worthy performances - 1996's The Mirror Has Two Faces. The Academy honoured her with a Governors' Award in 2009. She is survived by her three children: Leslie and Stephen Bogart, and Sam Robards, her only child with former husband, fellow actor Jason Robards.
