OBIT - GORDON WILLIS

Gordon Willis, one of cinema's most celebrated and influential cinematographers, has died, aged 82. A New York native, his work has assisted in defining the medium's impression of the city, and also the style of 1970s American cinema. Although he only worked for 28 years as a director of photography, he created some of the most memorable cinematography of those years: a long collaboration with Woody Allen including Interiors, Manhattan, Zelig and The Purple Rose of Cairo, Klute, All the President's Men, Comes a Horseman, Pennies from Heaven and all three films in the Godfather trilogy. Only nominated twice for an Oscar (and neither during the '70s), he was justly granted an Honorary Award at the first Governor's Awards ceremony in 2009.
