GARTH DAVIS, THE KING'S SPEECH PRODUCERS, TWC TO MAKE LION

Saroo Brierley's popular novel A Long Way Home tells the story of a five-year-old Indian boy who takes a wrong train and finds himself thousands of miles away from home in Calcutta, where he was rescued and adopted into an Australian family. The Weinstein Company has closed a $12 million deal for the rights to Brierley's book, which it is putting swiftly into development under the new title of Lion, probably with an eye to a 2015 awards-friendly release. I bet if Life of Pi hadn't roundly whooped their ass in the 2012 awards race, they wouldn't have even bothered. To ensure awards success, they're working again with The King's Speech producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman. Continuing on the Australian theme, what with the story's setting and Canning and Sherman's involvement, the book is being adapted by Candy's Luke Davies, and will be directed by Garth Davis. He helmed some of the episodes of Jane Campion's fantastic TV series Top of the Lake. One of my favourite things about that series was how Davis' direction was just as strong as Campion's.
