10 YEARS AT THE MOVIES: BEST 3D - GRAVITY

This might seem like an obvious choice, but Gravity's thrilling 3D design faced tough competition for this accolade from 2012's Dredd. The 3D trend has enjoyed a rise in popularity over the last five years to the extent that it is now regarded as a significant cash cow by studios, and a viable artistic element of filmmaking by select filmmakers, though perhaps not enough. Never mind the artful designs of Gravity's visual effects, nor their awesome application, the 3D in Alfonso Cuaron's multi-Oscar-winning film is just about unsurpassed in cinema. The level of depth achieved by the stereography team is one thing, but the willingness of Cuaron to use 3D as a thrill tactic is another, perhaps even more conceptually impressive thing, as too few films make use of this technique, incorrectly considering it as cheap and classless, when in fact it's very exciting! It may be some time before the 3D in Gravity is equalled.
