10 YEARS AT THE CINEMA: BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY - EMMANUEL LUBEZKI (TO THE WONDER)

Emmanuel Lubezki was one of the finest cinematographers in the business even before Terrence Malick got his hands on him. Remember A Little Princess? Sleepy Hollow? Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events? Ali? Like Water for Chocolate? Y Tu Mama Tambien? And what of his groundbreaking collaborations with Alfonso Cuaron, the director of that last film: Children of Men and Gravity, both spectacular work from the maverick Mexican. But my favourites from Lubezki are his stunningly beautiful, extraordinarily inventive, contextually perfect and precise compositions for Malick, which began with his outstanding cinematography for The New World, his justly acclaimed work on The Tree of Life, and my absolute favourite, the images he created for To the Wonder back in 2012. His use of light, colour and space in that film is utterly unparalleled, whether by him or by another director of photography in film, over the last ten years.
