I do sure love me some Zhang Yimou. This trailer promises a return to the Gong Li-starring dramas of his early career - the last film in a similar vein from his canon is perhaps 1999's The Road Home, though the last to star Gong in said vein would be 1994's To Live. And alongside the understated emotional drama, the trailer gives us a cracking cliffhanger - gosh, I love a cliffhanger! Rumour is that this may be Cannes-headed (it'd be Zhang's fourth film to show in official competition there), and I can already hear the engravers marking out Gong's name as Best Actress. She's already served as juror and won the Festival Trophy. Like, duh.
