2013: BIGGEST LOSS - PETER O'TOOLE

It may seem crass to declare any death as a bigger loss than another. And indeed, Peter O'Toole had already retired from acting. But no doubt about it: his death marked the end of a cinematic era, in which O'Toole reigned as one of cinema's most iconic characters and most formidable actors. His work in films like Lawrence of Arabia and The Lion in Winter rendered him a star, and most deservedly, though more unsung performances like his appearance in Wolfgang Petersen's Troy were equally good. And who could forget his work in 1972's The Ruling Class? I certainly never will, since it's one of the all-time greatest performances in film history. He has been missed since his death on the 14th of December, and will continue to be missed for many years to come.
