After it appeared yesterday that American Hustle was potentially on the verge of storming into the lead this Oscar race, along comes the NBR to shake things up. Back when the NBR announced first, their picks could more easily be isolated as early, and thus less relevant, choices. But now that the NYFCC has embroiled them into the thick of the race, they seem to bear more influence. And their utter shut out of American Hustle (not even featuring in their Top 11 flms of the year, being beaten by Lone Survivor and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - typical oddball NBR picks, those) and embrace of Spike Jonze's Her, itself shut out of the NYFCC's choices, is surely going to make them highly popular with onlookers this year. One thing currently looks clear, if nothing else does: this year ain't gonna be shit like last year.
