LARS VON TRIER HANDS FINAL CUT OVER ON NYMPHOMANIAC

Initial plans were for Lars von Trier to make two versions of his upcoming sex epic Nymphomaniac, a softcore one and a hardcore one, which would exclusively feature all that digital porn effects stuff we've been hearing about. Well, those plans have been scrapped. The softcore one is out, thankfully. Nobody wants an edited version of shit. The reason for this? von Trier was able to snip the film down to 330 minutes, which was deemed excessive (naaaaaawww, rly?), and so relinquished final cut on the film. It has since been trimmed to four hours, which will be split in two and premiered together in Copenhagen on Christmas Day. No word yet on what that means - is this a Kill Bill style situation? Or Che? Or Grindhouse? Nor any word on when von Trier's extended cut will see the light of day, though producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen denied that reports stating the film would screen at next year's Cannes Film Festival were true. Distributors in individual countries will have the discretion to blur whichever images they wish in the film for theatrical release in their territories. So not a lot of clarity just yet. The most notable piece of information here is surely the fact that von Trier allowed others to determine the final cut on his film, something a filmmaker such as himself would rarely do, especially on such an ambitious and personal project. But even the great Dane had to admit that a 5 1/2 hour film on an $11 million budget was too much, and that commercial prospects were obviously limited; he considered himself unable to make the further necessary cuts.
