NOV 22-24 BOX OFFICE REPORT: CATCHING FIRE CATCHES FIRE

Well, duh. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (1) broke all sorts of records and ended up near the top of all sorts of all-time charts at the US box office last weekend. Its weekend gross of $158.1 million might seem remarkable; considering expectations, it's definitely not. But obviously Catching Fire is another gigantic success for Lionsgate, and it's one of the best blockbusters of the year. Btw, did anyone notice another wide release over the weekend? No? No-one? That's because approximately no-one went to see Delivery Man (4), whose $7.9 million opening is awful, no doubt, but it's just another expected step down in Vince Vaughn's career.

Thor: The Dark World (2) and The Best Man Holiday (3) both experienced fairly steep declines on last weekend, expectedly in the case of the former, not so in the case of the latter. There were expansions among limited releases aplenty, with varying results. Dallas Buyers Club (10) made it into the Top 10 in just 666 theatres, though its gross was up only 53.4% since the previous frame. There's moderate interest in The Book Thief (16), but comparatively less in Nebraska (20), which doesn't look like it has many future expansions left in it, at least not any wildly successful ones. Good reviews for documentary Narco Cultura (62) weren't enough to save it from obscurity, while Michel Gondry's Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy? (45) took in under $1,000 per-theatre in only 33 locations - a dismal start for the much-loved director's new film. More high-profile releases fared better in selected screens, with Stephen Frears' Philomena (27) posting strong numbers ahead of a planned nationwide expansion, and Disney's Frozen (22) making big waves in its exclusive one-week run in Hollywood's El Capitan theatre, making $243,390 there alone over the weekend, the seventh-highest per-theatre average in film history in the US, behind six other Disney animation features.

The Winner / Highest Opener: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($158,074,256)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Frozen ($243,390)

What's that I see? Box Office Mojo?
