BRITISH INDEPENDENT FILM AWARD NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED

If you thought the Spirit Awards were irrelevant to the Oscar race, what about the Moet BIFAs? Starred Up leads the pack with eight nominations, and The Selfish Giant follows with seven. The strong love for a small few films means there are notable absences - The Invisible Woman from many major categories, alongside The Double and Under the Skin, both festival hits. 12 Years a Slave was only eligible for the International Award, though it has been snubbed in favour of five weaker films. But I'm delighted that Siobhan Finneran is nominated for The Selfish Giant, and I expect that Most Promising Newcomer nominees weren't permitted nominations in the main acting categories, as otherwise I can't explain what would thus be a snub of that film's leads, Conner Chapman and Shaun Thomas. Awards will be handed out on the 8th of December, innit, don't you know, och aye, and other British sayings.

    1. Marginally. At a push. Gun to my head, I'd choose 12 Years a Slave. The difference is minimal.
