BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM OSCAR - 76 FEATURES ELIGIBLE

76 countries, a fucking fraction of the world but then I bet the others don't care, have officially submitted films for consideration for the Best Foreign Language Film category. Now that they've gotten rid of the old voting system, which was actually a good one but didn't always yield good results, couldn't they get rid of the old rules? Since France couldn't submit Blue Is the Warmest Colour due to its release date, they've submitted Renoir instead, and it's boring. Selections below:

Ukraine: Paradjanov
UK: Metro Manila
Uruguay: Anina
Venezuela: Breach in the Silence

My thoughts? Renoir, probably - it's French and classically done. Wadjda, because it made history and it's a heartwarming story. The Hunt, because it's high profile (and very good). Ilo Ilo, because it's a crowdpleaser. And The Past, because it'll definitely be on their radar. Of that lot, I sure hope The Hunt makes it - it's terrific. And More Than Honey, Child's Pose and Neighbouring Sounds - they're just as good. I'll be seeing The Missing Picture, Heli, Borgman and The Past at LFF next week. As long as Lines of Wellington doesn't get nominated...
