JUL 26-28 BOX OFFICE REPORT: THE WOLVERINE SLASHED DOWN

The Wolverine may have earned over twice as much as any other film at the US box office this weekend, but its $53.1 million opening was below expectations, and not up to scratch. Indeed, no matter its decent long-term prospects, this is a clear disappointment, as the lowest start yet for a film from the X-Men franchise (not even considering box office inflation nor 3D ticket pricing). It was the only major nationwide release, although there were some other, more successful films opening over the weekend, as you'll find out after the jump.

Expanding nationwide, Fruitvale Station rose to a strong tenth, and now looks in line to close with $20 million at the very least. The Way, Way Back (11) was softer in its expansion, but still solid. And Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine (19) racked up a career-best (and year-to-date-best) per-theatre average for Woody Allen, with $102,011 per-theatre in six locations. Johnnie To's Drug War (63) in just one location, though, wasn't nearly as strong. The Conjuring's (2) small 46.9% decline was excellent for a horror movie; that film will now close well over $100 million. The Lone Ranger (14), continuing to plummet down the chart, will not. Pacific Rim (7), however, should, but not by much. Man of Steel (17) certainly won't reach $300 million, but its $286.8 million so far is pretty good nonetheless. R.I.P.D.'s (9) beating keeps on coming, as its per-theatre average was lower than its theatre count, and it fell below The Heat (8) in its fifth week. It could wind up closing below Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain's (18) final gross - that's a film that never even made it in to 900 locations. It still baffles me that Despicable Me 2 (3) is way ahead of Monsters University (12) in total gross. World War Z (13) genuinely looks on track for a total over $200 million now, and it's Brad Pitt's highest earner in his career to date. Who would have guessed?!

The Winner / Highest Opener: The Wolverine ($53,113,752)
Top Per-Theatre Average: Blue Jasmine ($102,011)
