REVIEWS COME IN FOR JEUNE ET JOLIE (YOUNG & BEAUTIFUL)

The first film on the official schedule for the Grand Lumiere Theatre at Cannes, Francois Ozon's Jeune et Jolie has been receiving generally positive, if slightly underwhelming praise from critics. The film is about a 16-year-old girl who chooses to become a prostitute.

At Variety, Leslie Felperin is largely impressed, especially by 23-year-old model Marine Vacth in the lead role. He also singles out Geraldine Pailhas as Vacth's mother, as does David Rooney at The Hollywood Reporter, who also enjoyed the film. The Telegraph's Robbie Collin has more good things to say about the 'puzzling but accomplished meditation on youth', also his opinions are not shared by Kevin Jagernauth at IndieWire. Falling somewhere in between the two are Peter Bradshaw at The Guardian and Dave Calhoun at Time Out. And Sasha Stone at Awards Daily is enigmatic about her feelings on the film, which is being compared by many to Luis Bunuel's Belle de Jour. A possible Palme contender? Maybe not, but I expect it'll be in the conversation for several of the other official awards.
