FIRST CANNES REVIEWS - HELI (AMAT ESCALANTE)

Amat Escalante's Heli has kicked the Cannes 2013 Official Selection line-up off in gritty style, according to early reports. The film will be screened tomorrow in the Lumiere Theatre, actually after Francois Ozon's Young and Beautiful, but critics were shown the film today.

The only full review is from Rope of Silicon's Brad Brevet, who gives it a mixed report, and notes its moments of shocking violence (which have been the main talking point for most, it seems). Guy Lodge on Twitter and Mike D'Angelo are two of the most influential voices to have posted about the film thus far. It doesn't seem to be a contender for the Palme D'Or, but juries have given major awards to controversial and divisive films in the past, so don't rule it out. I just can't imagine poor Nicole Kidman's face when the dog's neck gets wrung!
