CLAIRE DENIS' THE BASTARDS DIVIDES CRITICAL OPINION AT CANNES

After being an early figure of controversy at Cannes, showing in Un Certain Regard rather than Official Selection, Claire Denis' The Bastards has continued to draw a lot of attention after screening.

The film is considered 'frustratingly muddled' in Eric Kohn's review in IndieWire. And Xan Brooks at The Guardian is apparently more disappointed with The Bastards than by any other Denis project to date. But reaction on Twitter has been markedly better, with Guy Lodge and The Times' Wendy Ide both praising the film, with Lodge even stating that it's an insult that the film is not in competition, as many had suggested. It hasn't won over Jason Solomons, though. I'm a Denis devotee, so I'm only more excited to read him trash it as a 'piece of grubby rubbish'. Sounds like my kind of thang!
