BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI WILL HEAD VENICE FILM FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL JURY

Cannes pick Steven Spielberg, Venice go one better and pick Bernardo Bertolucci. It's hard to top Bernardo Bertolucci, and Steven Spielberg doesn't do it, soz. He's been in the chair once before - for its 40th anniversary, when the Golden Lion went to Jean-Luc Godard's First Name: Carmen. It's now the festival's 70th anniversary, and who better to take the post on two such special birthdays as Italy's premier film director? Bertolucci, astonishingly, has never had a film in competition at Venice, although he has been bestowed two special awards there in recent years - the Pietro Bianchi award in 1997, traditionally given to influential figures of Italian cinema, and the Career Golden Lion ten years later. The festival will take place between the 28th of August and the 7th of September.
