As regards the Academy, four of the five nominees in the main category here are eligible there - only Battleship won't get the Oscar nod for sure. Happy to see Prometheus there, and hope it gets in with Oscar; Life of Pi is certain for the Oscar, The Avengers and The Hobbit (the big winner here, with seven nominations) are less certain, but very likely. Winners on the 5th of February.

    1. It is a disappointment that Cloud Atlas doesn't receive a single nomination. This is a very narrow field from the VES - no Cloud Atlas, John Carter, Skyfall or Snow White and the Huntsman, and just one nomination apiece for The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man. I'll defend Battleship, in that its effects are very convincing, and prolific, but I'm a proponent of recognising not just accuracy and technical proficiency in categories such as visual effects, but also artistic design, and narrative function. So, agreed, this selection is a bit of a let down.
