In the vacuum that was pre-Oscar nominations, the BFCA were not to know that Argo wouldn't turn out to be the contender we all thought it would. They wouldn't have even considered rewarding it had they known - these guys are the biggest Oscar whores of the whole season. The real critics' choice is probably Zero Dark Thirty, going by the consensus from the critics' groups and also from reviews, but Jackson Murphy's mom wouldn't let him see it, so Argo won instead. 0D30 had to settle for Best Editing and Best Actress, the latter a surprising win, perhaps, as Jennifer Lawrence picked up everything else she was up for (that doesn't sound like much, sure, but including Ensemble, that's three awards for Lawrence). Lincoln and Life of Pi have to make do with the scraps, including awards which were handed out pre-show or during commercial breaks; it was a shoddy disaster of a show, lacking in glitz, ceremony, or any discernible sense of importance. That they saw fit to deem Judd Apatow a 'genius' after This Is 40 (or before, for that matter) is a sign of the redundancy of this outfit's tastes. Even winners like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Daniel Craig didn't bother turning up. A show, and some results, largely better best forgotten.

  1. I watch this show last night with the family. My 16 year-old daughter was thrilled at Hathaway's win, but I cringed a bit when I heard her correct the committee for misspelling her name. Hope that is not seem as bitchiness. In any case nice to see Affleck get his comeuppance after the morning snub, though these awards will not impact the Oscars one iota.

It's LINCOLN, PI, and SLP duking it out for the Oscar, unless LES MIS still rallies it's core group to win if everything else splits up all over the place.

    1. Les Mis will struggle a lot, though. Eight nominations is a disappointment, and never mind the Director snub, it'll also have to overcome the absence of both Screenplay and Editing too.

I liked it when Anne corrected them! I'd have done the same. It got a laugh, and she didn't seem too annoyed, so I think it was intended as humour and received as humour.

Actually, it was Ben Affleck's little dig at Oscar that I didn't like so much. I'm never impressed when people act like they expected to be nominated. Sure, he had good reason to expect it, but even if you take it on the chin (as he seems to have), just be happy with what you're given!

  2. Fair enough Paddy. But Affleck's snub was still a bitter pill. I don't personally but that the voter's in the director's branch were driven by artistic concerns. Otherwise Bigelow wouldn't have gotten snubbed. Affleck was in my opinion a FAR better choice than either the BEASTS director or Russell.

Affleck was right to issue that dig. Screw them! Every newspaper editorial stateside has been ripping into them, and frankly I wish I could write one as well.

As far as Hathaway Fair enough. I said what I said strictly in her own interest. I want her to win and don't wish her to be hurt. That's all.

    1. I don't think it has hurt her, though. I don't think much can now.

Not sold on Affleck's dig. They didn't have to nominate him, and he shouldn't have expected a nomination. He's nominated as a producer anyway, and he's a former Oscar winner. Shit, he could even win again this year. The way things are, who knows what film is going to win!
