AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS NOMINATIONS

Best Cinematography
Danny Cohen (Les Misérables)
Roger Deakins (Skyfall)
Janusz Kaminski (Lincoln)
Seamus McGarvey (Anna Karenina)
Claudio Miranda (Life of Pi)

Two cinematography nominations in one day for Anna Karenina - a sign that it could make it in with Oscar too? Some big contenders to get past: Django Unchained (they love Robert Richardson there), The Master, Zero Dark Thirty. The other four all look quite safe, although this is a rather unpredictable category this year, and both of the major cinematography precursors (although the BAFTAs don't often have much clout) have announced post-ballot deadline this year. Nice picks overall, though. Skyfall, Anna Karenina and Life of Pi are particularly beautifully photographed films. Winners will be released on the 10th of February, also the same day as the BAFTAs.

    1. I've been doubting his chances for a while now. A shame, because The Master was such lovely work from him.

  2. Very true, brother.
    Indeed it is.
What do u think is really hurting THE MASTER's chances?
When it came out of Venice, every1 were raving about it.
It was the film 2 be beat.

Since then it has missed AFI,PGA,DGA,SAG(EXCEPT SEYMOUR),BFCA director,ADG, ASC.
Now, many r nt even expecting it 2 show on Bes pic and director nod.
Was it really Pheonix's outrageous spat on awards season that is costin them even in the most deserving slots such as score/production design/cinematography?
Philip Hofffman Seymour is the ONLY one fm Master who seems 2 be the close contendor for smthn which has Lee Jones written all over.
Adams doesnt stand a chance against Field and Hathway.
Joaquin Pheonix arguably gave the most explosive and unforgettable performance, who shud b giving head-to-head competition 2 Daniel Day Lewis(equaly memorable) has no now steam at all.
Isnt is travesty of justice that ART DOESNT WANT ITSELF 2 B HONOURED?

    1. Lol, I don't think so. Great art doesn't need to be honoured, not when it's going to be remembered anyway. And The Master definitely will be: it'll be the film that the Venice jury liked too much, and took pity on Pieta's inferiority!

I think the film itself is what's hurting its chances. Phoenix's comments probably didn't help, but a lot of people either don't get The Master, or hate it (I expect a lot of those who hate it do so because they don't get it!).

I've felt all along, though, that the group that will best 'get' The Master this year, out of the major groups, is AMPAS. Not long now until we find out!

  3. Well, Cohen didn't follow up with the Oscar nod in this category, but frankly I was surprised he got the ASC nod. The film's cinematography was lovely at times, but not among the year's best.

Claudio Miranda should win, even while any possibility that Deakins can win will always be exciting.

    1. I'm probably rooting for Roger Deakins, actually. As much as I think he's a genius, I'm not sure I would have put his work in my top five ten times over the years. But I so loved his work in Skyfall, even more than Claudio Miranda's work in Life of Pi. All nice choices, though.

Danny Cohen's style is beginning to annoy me a bit. It's too artificially murky.
