Ever alternative, the OFCS is always likely to surprise, choosing nominees surprising both for good and for bad reasons, depending on one's taste. To my taste, Silver Linings Playbook's almost total absence (only JLaw sneaks in), and Les Mis' (only Anne), Holy Motors' success, The Turin Horse's nomination, The Master's dominance. Not to my taste, Naomi's absence, Life of Pi's almost total absence, The Cabin in the Woods' nomination (that film continues to show promise in that category - to think that film was shelved for years!) and that peculiar Adapted Screenplay slate - even sans Silver Linings Playbook, I'm not impressed by Cloud Atlas' appearance, and even less impressed by Cosmopolis'! Still, their choices are, collectively, beyond reproach, as it's hard to argue that they're trying too hard to influence the race, nor slavishly follow its trajectory. Winners three weeks from now, on the 7th.
