After what looked like one of the most open awards seasons in years, Zero Dark Thirty has won two of the four top critics' awards (not counting the Critics' Choice), and the first two of the season. Many were unsure how it would perform - early reactions have been very positive, but so too have those for Les Miserables, Django Unchained and The Impossible. Tried and tested successes like Lincoln and Argo looked like safer bets, but it looks like the critical response to 0D30 will perhaps be the strongest of any major Oscar contender this year. The Master and Life of Pi (which appeared, on paper, to be right up the NBR's street) have both been entirely shut out, and Silver Linings Playbook receives a significant boost, beating Lincoln to Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay in two heinous decisions. Leonardo DiCaprio recoups some of the buzz he apparently relinquished to his costar Samuel L. Jackson according to early reactions to Django, Jessica Chastain advances further in the Best Actress race, and Ann Dowd receives a well-deserved citation. Beasts of the Southern Wild also gets a push, as does Promised Land, despite some only mildly positive reviews.
