A very mixed bag from the AAFCA. As usual, a number of black-centric films in the top 10, although perhaps some fewer than usual. It's all looking good (whether or not Middle of Nowhere deserves such a high ranking is tempered by the fact that it surely needs a push) until you get to number ten, and Think Like a Man smacks you right in the gob. Other questionable choices include Rise of the Guardians for Animated Feature and The Intouchables for Foreign Language Film. It seems, rather like the BAFTAs with British films, that the AAFCA are torn between advocating for African-American-themed films, and simply honouring the best filmmaking of the year, regardless of any other factors. On another note, curious that they give Zero Dark Thirty their top award, and then give Best Director to Ben Affleck. It had seemed, thus far, that 0D30 was a stronger force in Director than in Picture, and that, where it wins Picture, it definitely also wins Director.
