Some surprises here. Super 8 and Hanna, both films which has Oscar whisperings once but mostly no longer, are unexpected but deserved nominees. Pirates of the Caribbean and Hugo definitely deserve their places too, but I'm not sure how Moneyball made it into this top five. That it made it past The Tree of Life, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and War Horse, three of the best examples of sound mixing I've heard in years, is unforgiveable. Remember Stellan Skarsgard's teeth scattering across the floor in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, or the sickening squelches in Lisbeth's revenge? Remember the rustling of the leaves in the trees in War Horse? Best thing about that film! I expect the Academy to rectify some of the CAS' mistakes, although the match-up between the two organisations is usually very close. I'm a little ashamed that sound mixers can't recognise the best of their own craft.
